Introduction of the Institute of Space Systems Engineering (iSSE)

The Institute of Space Systems Engineering (iSSE) at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) was established in February 2023 with the mission of advancing interdisciplinary education, research, and hands-on training in space systems engineering. iSSE was founded to address the growing demand for system-level engineers capable of contributing to Taiwan's rapidly expanding space industry.

The institute's long-term strategic priorities focus on three pillars: Systems Engineering, Rocket Systems, and Satellite Systems. Guided by the core values of Innovation, Interdisciplinarity, and Global Impact, iSSE is dedicated to cultivating space systems engineers with strong capabilities in rocket and satellite system integration through interdisciplinary education, cutting-edge research, and hands-on training, thereby contributing to the advancement of Taiwan's space technology and industry.

The institute currently hosts six core faculty members, with an additional faculty member joining in early 2026, covering key areas including rocket and propulsion engineering, satellite communications, optical payloads, plasma and space propulsion, and system integration. In addition, iSSE leverages the strength of more than 40 jointly appointed faculty from NYCU, national research institutes, and industry partners such as TASA and ITRI, forming a highly integrated academic and industrial ecosystem.

Education lies at the heart of iSSE's mission. The institute admits approximately 15 master's students per year and offers a rigorous curriculum centered on space system integration, project management, and real-world mission execution. Students actively participate in multi-tier rocket development programs, CubeSat missions, high-altitude balloon experiments, and international competitions, ensuring strong alignment between academic training and industry needs.

Through its integrated approach to education, research, and international collaboration, iSSE aspires to become a world-class institute in space systems engineering. With the mission “Inspiring Student Space Exploration”, iSSE seeks to strengthen Taiwan's presence in global space technology while inspiring the next generation of engineers to explore the limitless possibilities of space.
